Judge O. Rogeriee Thompson Is Honored for Service to Students

Providence, R.I., September 20, 2011 – The College Crusade of Rhode Island announced that the Honorable O. Rogeriee Thompson, Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, is the 2011 recipient of the Dr. Americo W. Petrocelli Distinguished Service Award. The award recognizes Judge Thompson for “her extraordinary contribution to increasing college access for all Rhode Island students.” The award is named for Dr. Americo W. Petrocelli, who founded The College Crusade of Rhode Island in 1989 during his tenure as RI commissioner of higher education. The award presentation took place at The College Crusade’s 2011 annual meeting.
Judge Thompson is a founding board member of The College Crusade and served alongside Dr. Petrocelli during the organization’s formative years. She served as chair of the board from 2000 to 2004. Judge Thompson was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit by President Barack Obama in 2009 and was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate in March 2010. She received an A.B. from Brown University and a J.D. from Boston University School of Law. She also holds honorary degrees from Roger Williams University School of Law, the University of Rhode Island, and Bryant College. In 2006 she received the "Women of Excellence Award" from the Women's Center of Rhode Island. In 2010 she was inducted into the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Hall of Fame in Providence. Judge Thompson is a resident of Cranston.
