Alumni of The College Crusade of Rhode Island are teaching a course in study skills to new sixth graders entering the program this summer

Providence, R.I., July 13, 2010 – For the fourth summer, The College Crusade of Rhode Island is sponsoring its annual Ways to A’s study-skills program for students joining the organization. Approximately 400 sixth-grade students from Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, and Woonsocket will attend the study-skills program, held in four-day sessions during July and August at the Community College of Rhode Island, Liston Campus, in Providence.

The Ways to A’s curriculum, custom developed for The College Crusade, introduces incoming sixth-grade students to the academic, social, and personal challenges of middle school. The coursework includes exercises in active listening, note taking, reading, and writing. The program also addresses memory improvement, test taking, learning styles, and time and classroom management. Students acquire a host of new skills they can apply daily in their classes during the school year.

One of the most important features of the Ways to A’s course is the team of instructors chosen to teach it – as in past years, all six are alumni of The College Crusade who are pursuing a college degree or are recent college graduates:

•  Tiffany Hooks of Coventry, a 2009 graduate of the University of Rhode Island with a B.S. in Exercise Science

•  Rahja Laster of East Providence, a 2010 graduate of the University of Rhode Island with a B.S. in Human Development and Family Studies

•  David Miya of Providence, a 2010 graduate of Rhode Island College with a B.S. in General Management

•  Chanravy Proeung of Cranston, a 2009 graduate of Rhode Island College with a B.S. in Nursing

•  Kathy Toro of Pawtucket, a 2009 graduate of the University of Rhode Island with a B.S. in Psychology

•  Sarah Vanover of Pawtucket, a senior at Rhode Island College pursuing a B.S. in Management

The 2010 Ways to A’s teaching staff also includes College Crusade Middle School Advisors Javier Cabreja of Warwick and Judith Taveras of Providence. The Ways to A’s program coordinator for 2010 is Adam Tarczuk, a Warwick native who now lives in Johnston. Tarczuk is a former College Crusade Advisor who now teaches eighth-grade social studies at Grafton Middle School, in Grafton, Mass.

In connection with the academic program for students, each child’s family will participate in a College Crusade membership orientation that describes how they can help their child succeed in school and be ready for college.
