The College Crusade of Rhode Island Announces 2008 All-Star Students

Four students from Providence, two from Woonsocket, and one from Central Falls win top honors in excellence awards for 2008

Providence, R.I., January 14, 2009 – The College Crusade of Rhode Island announced today that seven local students have been named College Crusade All-Stars for 2008. To become a College Crusade All-Star, each student had to earn a GPA of 85 or better for all four quarters of 2007-2008, have perfect school attendance, and have high participation in College Crusade programs for the year.

“You make a commitment to dedicate yourself to achievement and to never give up,” says Richelene Cesar, an All-Star senior at Mount Pleasant High School. Richelene plans to study psychology and hopes to attend Wheelock College next year. Her experience as a member of The College Crusade inspired her to work hard in school. “You decide you are going to reach for the stars and succeed,” she says. Her twin sister, Cindy, also earned All-Star status this year.

“Being in The College Crusade is to be someone unique,” says Alicia Mello, an All-Star eighth grader at Woonsocket Middle School. “It’s to believe in yourself and have friends you can trust. You get to be a better person and become someone you know you can be.” Alicia is a budding artist and songwriter, and one of her poems has already been published.

They dedicate themselves to academic achievement and seek to develop personally in all areas of their lives. We eagerly anticipate their future accomplishments.”

About The College Crusade of Rhode Island
The College Crusade of Rhode Island is the state’s most comprehensive college-readiness and scholarship program for middle school and high school students in low-income urban school districts. It serves approximately 3,800 students per year and rewards the efforts and achievements of financially eligible students with up to four years of college scholarships. From grade 6 through grade 12, Crusaders experience the steady, nurturing presence of caring adults and participate in activities that focus on academic enrichment, social and personal development, career awareness and exploration, and readiness for college. Students who are members of The College Crusade graduate and go right on to college at much higher rates than their peers in the state’s urban school districts. Since 2001, The College Crusade has awarded over $18 million in college scholarships to more than 2,500 graduates from Rhode Island high schools.
