Local College Students Show Youth the “Ways to A’s”
Alumni of The College Crusade of Rhode Island are teaching a course in study skills to new sixth graders entering the program this summer
Providence, R.I., July 15, 2009 – Again this summer, The College Crusade of Rhode Island is sponsoring its annual Ways to A’s study-skills program for students interested in joining the organization. Nearly 300 sixth-grade students from Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, and Woonsocket are attending the study-skills program, which is being held in four-day sessions during the month of July at the Community College of Rhode Island, Liston Campus, in Providence. The Ways to A’s curriculum, custom developed for The College Crusade, introduces incoming sixth-grade students to the academic, social, and personal challenges of middle school. The coursework includes exercises in active listening, note taking, reading, and writing. The program also addresses memory improvement, test taking, learning styles, and time and classroom management. Students acquire a host of new skills they can apply daily in school. One of the most important features of the Ways to A’s course is the team of instructors chosen to teach it – as in past years, all five are alumni of The College Crusade who are currently in college or who are recent college graduates. College Crusade alumni who are teaching Ways to A’s this summer are: - Casby Harrison of Providence, a senior at Northeastern University, majoring in Marketing - Tiffany Hooks of Coventry, a 2009 graduate of the University of Rhode Island with a B.S. in Exercise Science - Rahja Laster of East Providence, a senior at the University of Rhode Island, majoring in Human Development and Family Studies - Chanravy Proeung of Cranston, a 2009 graduate of Rhode Island College with a B.S. in Nursing - Marianella Solano of Pawtucket, a 2009 graduate of the University of Rhode Island with a B.A. in Psychology. The Ways to A’s site coordinator for 2009 is Adam Tarczuk, of Warwick. Tarczuk is a former College Crusade Advisor who now teaches eighth-grade social studies at Grafton Middle School, in Grafton, Mass. About The College Crusade of Rhode Island The College Crusade of Rhode Island is the state’s most comprehensive college-readiness and scholarship program for middle school and high school students in low-income urban school districts. It serves approximately 3,700 students per year and rewards the efforts and achievements of financially eligible students with up to four years of college scholarships. From grade 6 through grade 12, Crusaders experience the steady, nurturing presence of caring adults and participate in activities that focus on academic enrichment, social and personal development, career awareness and exploration, and readiness for college. Students who are members of The College Crusade graduate and go right on to college at much higher rates than their peers in the state’s urban school districts. Since 2001, The College Crusade has awarded over $20 million in college scholarships to more than 2,700 graduates from Rhode Island high schools.
